It’s Not About Being the Best
“Real trainers should try to win with their favorites.” This is one of the most profound quotes I’ve found in any sort of media, and one of the most easily adapted to situations. I was nine, maybe ten, when I beat the Johto League on my copy of Pokemon Crystal. Karen was the last fight before the champion and used a type I hadn’t seen yet – dark types. I had no idea how to handle her, but I won with brute force and some well-timed healing, at which point she said something that, even today, st
I woke the next morning when I heard voices talking, and Malachi smiled at me. “Sleep well?”
I nodded, then put my uniform on. “What happens to new students on day two?”
“In Tanka, you choose your weapon. Be sure to choose carefully, it’ll be the weapon you carry through your entire time at Carlonis.”
“Thanks for the heads-up. I assume it’s after breakfast?”
“Yeah. Come on, we don’t want to be late.”
The clan went down to breakfast as a group, and we sat down and started eating. I’d chosen to sit within sight of Malachi, but among different clanmates from
I watched them from the shadows, the two saviors of our world. Spyro and Cynder, the Prophesied One and the Queen of Darkness... And, in a way, my parents. I shuddered as the memory tried to overwhelm me again, the memory of my creation. The memory of how Malefor, barely a week after he’d returned, found Spyro and Cynder and used some of their power to turn me from an orphaned, terrified hatchling into the black-and-purple warrior I am now. I didn’t have to see my reflection to know that I resembled the both of them - my body as lithe and strong as Spyro’s, my wings and tail bladed silver like Cynder’s, my body covered
Wrath and I made good time, covering almost ten miles in about an hour. Another fifteen minutes and we were accosted by a cocky looking weavile flanked by about a dozen humans. “Well well, what do we have here? Are you two lost or something?”
The condescending tone in his voice irritated me, and I let him know by knocking him to the ground and pinning him under my foot before speaking. “We can give you Arcadia Base. You’re going to take us to your Commander immediately, or I will kill you and choose one of your little friends to take us to your base.”
He nodded, so I let him up and he started walking east, moti

Events of note, as described by Taran:
It had been a long day, and I was ready to head home and get some sleep. Unfortunately, a freak earthquake had other ideas. The ground started shaking, and before I had time to feel anything other than an instant of fear the ground opened beneath me and I fell into utter darkness, my mind going dark when I felt myself hit something solid.
I woke to extreme fatigue and some dull, throbbing pain in most of my
I slowly wandered through the halls of Valdez Base, looking for something to shake the crushing grip of boredom. Fortunately, I found it. Unfortunately, it was a sceptile harassing a young vulpix, and I knew the guy was bad news.
"Lay off, Richard. You know what I’ll do to you."
He turned and glared at me, obviously upset that I chose to interfere. I was impressed that he didn't wet himself seeing a twelve-foot-long Tyrantrum staring at him. "The brat won't say a word if he's smart."
That did it. My temper broke, and I looked the vulpix in the eyes. "Run for it kid!"
He ran like the hounds of hell were after him and didn't look back

It was a seemingly normal day in the backwoods of North Carolina, the birds were singing, the crickets were chirping, and the sunset was beautiful. I was sitting under an ancient oak tree in my front yard, a tree so massive that I couldn’t wrap my arms even halfway around it. I had a beautiful view of the sun setting over the horizon, and the few scattered clouds were painted with colors no artist’s brush could replicate. I sighed, wondering how long my idyllic life would last, but I set such thoughts aside for the time being and simply let myself relax as I enjoyed the beautiful sight before me.

I woke with a start, gasping for breath. I was immediately attended by an Audino in a nurse’s hat. “What’s wrong?”
“Just a bad memory coming back.” Then I looked at myself. “I thought I was turning into a Zangoose. What about the other guy that was brought in with me?”
“Samuel?” I nodded. “He finished changing about six hours ago. He’s probably in his room right now.”
“What did he change into?”
She closed her eyes, and I knew I wouldn’t like what I was about to hear. “A Seviper. Are you two close?”
I closed my eyes and fought back
It was back, that numb feeling I get in my head. I’d just had my family turn their backs on me, and now only my parents were wanting me to stay. I fell onto my bed and closed my eyes, and let myself fall into the welcoming darkness. I could see all of my failings, my failures and my mistakes swirling around me, and as I fell deeper the weight of all I’d ever done wrong began to weigh me down, pushing me ever deeper into the darkness.
But soon, it began to feel warm, inviting, even comforting. It was something I could count on to be there, no matter what I did. I knew that the darkness that plagued me... was the only thing I could
Comcast and their pile of ugly tagalongs is after net neutrality. Again.

Contact them, people. And while you're doing it, I recommend mentioning that Comcast is an illegal monopoly, made so by United States Anti-Trust Law, most notably the Sherman act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914.
A retro game store recently opened a fourth location in my hometown, and I'm in love with the selection. I got six great PS2 games for thirty bucks, and have found myself addicted to God of War within the first level. God of War 2 is on my list for after I finish the backlog (which includes resident evil four), any other suggestions?
51 years ago today. It was fifty-one years ago that the perhaps the greatest force of scientific inspiration of our modern age first came into public sight, and fifty-one years of a phenomenal legacy. In '66 we were breaking our backs to put men in space with computers weaker than the cell phone in your pocket, and now we've got a probe in interstellar space (Voyager 1, if anyone's curious). We went from phone booths and rabbit-ear TVs to cell phones and wireless just about everything, and I'll argue to the end of time that Star Trek is why. Without that driving force, without that phenomenal guess at what the future might bring we may never
